Artist Statement

An investigation into materials, texture, and movement of wave theory.

As a teenager, I had a vision of creating a wall of texture on a canvas, and this thought never left me. For many years I thought about the cliff face, that stamped itself into my mind. After working in ceramics for over five years, I had learned to use many natural minerals, rocks, and clays, so this was a natural progression to transform this into a living wall. Not a living wall in the traditional sense, but a wall of movement. Waves have always enticed my imagination and with clay, I managed to get the depth that I wanted to leap out of the structure. It is a very visceral mixed media piece, that pushed my boundaries as an artist to adapt to clay on a vertical surface. The clay was also mixed into a polymer which equated to 500 liters of semi-wet texture that was fluid enough to move about to get the desired effect. The movement of waves and the dynamics of movement in free form.

The shimmering effect was the next phase of learning. I wanted a pearl appearance for the effervescence effect. That glistening of sun on the water and yet also the darkness that moved in around the highs and lows. Using various mixes of spray paint, acrylics, and metallics, this slowly evolved into that mesmerizing feeling, of looking into the deep blue sea, gazing into her depths was achieved.

The idea of evolving the pursuit of knowledge in technology and the feeling of light reflection (a deep spiritual connection) and quantum dynamics, really came alive with this piece. She is a one-off art installation and experimental piece, which deserves to be placed well with offset and direct lighting, to get the true intentions of the artist's vision.
